“Rs 11 crore in the opening weekend?” “Is that for real?” “A Vivek Oberoi film has earned this much money?”

A sense of shock took over our team when the opening weekend numbers of Vivek Oberoi-starrer PM Narendra Modi came out. Because it’s hard to remember the last time a Vivek Oberoi film crossed the Rs 10-crore mark. Lifetime collection.

But looks like Vivek Oberoi ke achchhe din aa gaye.

Piggybacking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s win at the Lok Sabha elections 2019 and his immense popularity, Vivek Oberoi’s PM Narendra Modi biopic has done what most of his last Bollywood releases failed to do – get a two-digit collection (in crores) in the opening weekend. Despite harsh criticism at the hands of film reviewers, PM Narendra Modi minted Rs 13.56 crore in the first four days of its release. All thanks to PM Modi, Vivek has finally got his biggest success as a solo hero in more than a decade.

When Vivek Oberoi burst into the Bollywood scene with Ram Gopal Varma’s Company in 2002, almost everyone sat and took notice of this new talent. In no time, Vivek Oberoi turned out to be the new blue-eyed boy of Bollywood. Saathiya and Yuva were proof that Vivek had all the makings of a superstar. But little did Vivek know that this instant success would also lead to his biggest downfall. That infamous press conference in 2003 proved fatal for Vivek’s promising career.

An actor, who was once a budding star, was now reduced to two-hero films. That number would soon increase. Pyaare Mohan, Naksha, Fool n Final, Mission Istanbul turned out to be some of the most forgettable films in Vivek’s filmography.

It was in 2010 that Vivek returned as a solo hero with Prince. A film that is remembered more for its popular song Tere Liye (chhod di khudaai, JCB memes, anyone?) than Vivek’s acting chops.

Three years later, in 2013, Vivek tried one last shot at being a solo hero with Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story. The film tanked without a trace, and so did Vivek’s acting career in Bollywood.

After a radio silence for a long time, Vivek has erupted on the Bollywood scene with PM Narendra Modi. A film that has been in the eye of the storm ever since its announcement. From being called a propaganda film to being stalled by Election Commission at the very last minute, PM Narendra Modi has had its share of hiccups. However, the delay in the release of Modi biopic has turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Vivek Oberoi and his film.

Had the film released before Lok Sabha elections, PM Narendra Modi would have disappeared without a trace.

Vivek, who is happy to start his second innings in Bollywood, is ecstatic with the love pouring in from all quarters.

“Itne saare pyaar bhare messages poore vishwa se aa rahe hai. Dubai mein, Australia mein, London mein ‘Modi! Modi!’ ke naare lag rahe hai theatres mein. ‘Bharat mata ki jai’ keh rahe hai log. Deshbhakti ki bhavna umad rahi ha logon mein. Kahin kahin standing ovation log de rahe hai. (So many appreciative messages are coming in from around the world. In Dubai, Australia and London, people are chanting, ‘Modi! Modi!’ in theatres. People are chanting, ‘Bharat mata ki jai!’ In some places, we have also got a standing ovation),” Vivek told IndiaToday.in.

“Bahut log taareef kar rahe hai ki, ‘Aap ki chaal, aap ke haav-bhaav, aap ke bolne ka tareeka aisa tha ki hum andar gaye toh laga ki Vivek ko dekh rahe hai, 20 minute baad bhool gaye Vivek ko aur sirf Modi ji nazar aa rahe the.’ Iss tarah ke jo reactions aa rahe hai, iske liye maine aur poori team ne bohot mehnat ki hai. Iss mehnat ka phal mil raha hai (A lot of people praised me saying, ‘Your walk, mannerisms and way of speaking made us forget that we were watching Vivek on screen. After 20 minutes, we could only see Modi ji.’ The entire team and I have worked really hard to get these kind of reactions. We are reaping the fruits of our hard work),” he added.

Looks like Vivek Oberoi is back in game, even if for a brief time. And he has only Modi to thank for this miracle.
