Kangana Ranaut and controversies go hand in hand. No, really. The Manikarnika actress was recently banned from Twitter for one such. Yet, the saga continues, this time on Instagram. The most recent one being her ‘bheek’ statement, where she claimed during an interview with a television channel that India’s independence in 1947 was ‘bheek wali azaadi’ and we only received true freedom in 2014. No points for guessing what she actually meant, but still, check this out for a better understanding.
The usual followed. Netizens schooled Kangana Ranaut, which led to her promising that she will return her Padma Shri if anyone can prove she “disrespected martyrs and freedom fighters” in her statement. Then, some more schooling followed. You know the drill.
So as Kangana Ranaut and her ever feather-ruffling statements trend on social media, here’s a recap of 5 times Kangi dearest got destroyed for her remarks.
When the Farmers’ Protest was at its peak last year, Kangana had made several controversial statements. She had termed farmers “terrorists” and there was also a police complaint filed against her. However, the best response came from Diljit Dosanjh, who, for want of a better word, destroyed Kangana Ranaut, and how!
The Twitter war of words started when Kangana Ranaut tweeted false information about an elderly Sikh woman, claiming that she is protesting to earn a sum of Rs 100, adding that the same woman had earlier gained popularity as the Shaheen Bagh Dadi, Bilkis Bano. When Diljit shared proof of who this lady actually was, Kangana called him “Karan Johar ke paltu (a pet)”. Diljit’s response, “Tuneh Jitne Logon Ke Saath Film Ki Tu Un Sab Ki Paaltu Hai…? Fer To List Lambi Ho Jaegi Maalko Ki..? Eh Bollywood Wale Ni PUNJAB Wale aa .. Hikk Te Vajj Sadey. Jhooth bol kar logo ko badhkana aur emotions se khailna woh toh aap achey se janti ho (Are you a pet of whoever you have worked with? The list will be long then. This isn’t Bollywood, this is Punjab. You know how to play with people’s emotions).” Epic, right?
Now that was a row to remember. Get what we did there? If you are wondering who Justin Rao is, well, he’s a journalist. During the promotions of Judgementall Hai Kya, which starred Kangana along with Rajkummar Rao in the lead, Kangy accused a journalist of running a “smear campaign” against her. Why? Because he gave her film Manikarnika a negative review. “Tum mere baare mei kitni gandi gandi baatein likhte ho. Jingoistic bolte ho. Itni gandi soch laate kahan se ho?” The actress went on to say, “You are bashing my film Manikarnika. Have I made a mistake by making a film? You are calling me a jingoistic person for making a film on nationalism,” Kangana said.
Justin, while he was being accused, calmly responded to Kangana and said that she was being “unfair”. A review is personal, and it is a matter of perspective, after all. That wasn’t all. The Entertainment Journalists’ Guild of India wrote a letter demanding a public apology from Kangana and the producers of Judgementall Hai Kya, that is Balaji Telefilms. And they did. “A lot is being reported about the debate that ensued between our film JudgeMentall Hai Kya’s actor and journalist Justin Rao, at the film’s song launch event on July 7th, 2019. Unfortunately, the event took an unpleasant turn…While the people involved in it fairly held their own perspectives but because it happened at the event of our film, we, as the producers, would like to apologize and express regret for this untoward incident,” read the statement.
Remember the time when Kangana had said that Mumbai feels unsafe to her? Like Pakistan occupied Kashmir? Well, in a series of comments against the Mumbai Police, Maharashtra government and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, Kangana Ranaut had said, “Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena leader, has given me an open threat and asked me not to come back to Mumbai after Aazadi graffitis in Mumbai streets and now open threats, why Mumbai is feeling like Pakistan occupied Kashmir (sic)?”
Sanjay Raut’s response? “Kangana Ranaut is a mental case. She is spitting in the plate she eats from. There are some political parties supporting her. Let her go to PoK. The government should fund her two-day visit to PoK. If the government does not, we are ready to bear the cost for her trip to PoK. Also, our government says that PoK is our part. So, what she is talking about. [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi Saheb has carried out surgical strikes in PoK. So, which side Kangana stands? Is she on the terrorist’s side? What is her mental state?” Another epic response, isn’t it?
Yes, that too happened. Any guesses who won? No one. While Twitter banned Kangana Ranaut and suspended her account for life, the Panga actress swiftly moved to Instagram and continued. So how did it lead to the ban? Well, Kangana started off by criticising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the alleged violence that took place in the state following the announcement of State Assembly Election results on May 2. Twitter permanently suspended her account after she appeared to be calling for retaliatory violence in light of reports of bloodshed in West Bengal. Kangana didn’t stop at being banned and said, “We’ve been clear that we’ll take strong enforcement action on behaviour that has the potential to lead to offline harm. The account has been permanently suspended for repeated violations of Twitter Rules specifically our Hateful Conduct policy and Abusive Behaviour policy.”
Twitter also calmly explained the ban and said, “We’ve been clear that we’ll take strong enforcement action on behaviour that has the potential to lead to offline harm. The account has been permanently suspended for repeated violations of Twitter Rules specifically our Hateful Conduct policy and Abusive Behaviour policy.”
Well, the struggle is real for Kangana Ranaut. The people she’s been fighting for, now seem to not be able to accept her ‘bheek’ comment. Of course, her comment was a tad bit outrageous, where she alleged that India was not granted real freedom in 1947, and that it was basically bheek or alms. India only received real freedom in 2014 when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power. This was days after she received her Padma Shri, and soon enough the Internet clamped down and demanded her award be withdrawn.
BJP leader Varun Gandhi had the best response. Varun said, “Sometimes an insult to Mahatma Gandhi’s sacrifice and penance, sometimes respect to his [Mahatma Gandhi’s] killer, and now an insult to the sacrifices of lakhs of freedom fighters — from Shaheed Mangal Pandey to Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and more. Should I call this madness or treason?”
Kangana did take the argument forward and said that she will return her Padma Shri if anyone can prove she disrespected martyrs and freedom fighters. Umm, we refer you back to Varun Gandhi’s comment. Get it?
