Dipika Chikhlia of Ramayan fame might soon be seen playing Sarojini Naidu in a biopic. The actress, who was recently seen in Bala as Yami Gautam’s mother, has two films, Gaalib and Deendayal Ek Yugpurush, in post-production.
In an exclusive chat with IndiaToday.in, Dipika revealed that she has been offered Sarojini Naidu’s biopic. The film will be written and directed by Dhiraj Mishra, who is also the writer of both of her upcoming films.
The actress hasn’t signed on the dotted lines yet but was elated when she was offered the role of the political activist. “I have been offered Sarojini Naidu biopic. Dhiraj (Mishra) hasn’t narrated the story due to the lockdown but he has briefly mentioned it. We have to look into the details. We will be sitting for a story session, once all this is over. I am looking forward to doing it if everything falls in place,” she said.
This is the first biopic based on the life of Sarojini Naidu, who played an important part in India’s freedom struggle. However, Dipika couldn’t find much about her online. “I researched on Sarojini Naidu but there isn’t much material available online,” she said.
Dipika has been waiting for an interesting role so when she was offered the biopic, she was all excited. “I was very happy when I was offered the role because I am someone who associates with history a lot,” she added.
The Ramayan actress feels it’s too early to comment on how she would prepare for the role but believes a lot of brainstorming would have to be done as Sarojini was an important figure in Indian politics. “This is something that needs to be studied. After the story session, we will have to sit down and chalk out how the characterisation would be done. This is a subject that needs thorough research. And this would be new for me as I have never done a biopic before. I gave an extension of myself to Sita but with Sarojini Naidu, I cannot do that,” said Dipika Chikhlia.
In her upcoming film Gaalib, the actress plays the role of Afzal Guru’s wife, while in Deendayal Ek Yugpurush, she’s the editor of a newspaper. Opening up on her roles, she said, “In Deendayal, I have a negative role. I am playing a newspaper editor. It’s based on the murder mystery revolving around Deen Dayal Upadhyay, which was never solved. Gaalib is about a terrorist, who has been hung. He is my husband. The story is about how a terrorist’s death affects his family.”
