Wednesday was officially the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL ) 2021 season as the 8 franchises announced their lists of released and retained players for the 14th season of the tournament. The work for the mini-auction has already begun and teams have made some tough calls while letting go of some big names.
However, Royal Challengers Bangalore faced criticism from former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel as he believes he was released by the franchise despite having announced his retirement in December 2020.
Parthiv Patel moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018 and was tasked with the responsibility of opening the batting. The former Gujarat captain scored 526 runs in 20 matches but he did not get an opportunity to feature in the playing XI in IPL 2020 even as he travelled to the UAE with the rest of the squad.
“An absolute honour to be released after being retired . … thank you @RCBTweets,” Patel said in a social media post.
RCB, on their official website, haven’t used the world “release” when mentioning their departure with Patel. “Parthiv Patel, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket is the other obvious emission from the squad,” the RCB statement read.
Also, a day after announcing his retirement Patel had joined Mumbai Indians, his former franchise, as a talent scout. “I had enjoyed my cricket playing for Mumbai Indians, those momentous three years with the champion sides remain etched in my memory. It’s time now to turn a new chapter in my life,” Patel had said.
RCB, who reached the play-offs for the first time in 4 years when they sneaked through to the last 4 at IPL 2020, released quite a few names, including their overseas stars like Dale Steyn, Chris Morris, Moeen Ali, Isuru Udana and Aaron Finch. India fast bowler Umesh Yadav and young all-rounder Shivam Dube were among the ones to be released.
