Kangana Ranaut is stepping into the shoes of another tough character – that of the erstwhile queen of Tamil cinema, controversial politician, and revered public figure, Jayalaithaa. It’ll be her second biopic and the actress is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that she’s well-prepared for her role. From attending Bharatnatyam classes to undergoing prosthetics to learning Tamil, she’s doing it all. However, a biopic, though centered on the eponymous artiste, can’t be about her/his character alone, as the others roles are equally important in influencing how said biopic turns out. One such role for the Jayalalithaa biopic, aptly titled Thalaivi, is that of N.T. Rama Rao, fondly known to his legion of fans as NTR – an equally charismatic cinematic icon, politician, and public figure.

The makers of the film were courting Jr. NTR for the role as he not only is NTR’s grandson, but is also a huge star and brilliant actor. However, recent reports suggests that Young Tiger (no prizes for guessing that NTR’s grandson had to have a sobriquet of his own) has turned down the offer. The source close to the project, from whom the reports have emerged, didn’t specify the reason for Jr. NTR declining the offer to play his legendary grandfather on screen, but with Kangana Ranaut being cast as the lead, we can only imagine.
Thalaivi will be helmed by noted Kollywood Director, A.L. Vijay, and will release in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Beside Kangana, Arvind Swami is the only other actor confirmed as part of the cast at this point.
