Four soldiers, including a Major, and two militants were killed in an exchange of fire in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district early on Monday after a joint team of forces launched an operation after inputs about the presence of militants.

At around 8.45 am Monday, a fresh exchange of fire started in which a civilian was also killed. Locals said that both sides are trading heavy fire.

While there was silence for seven hours, the cordon and search operation in the area continues and fresh firing started in the morning. On Sunday night, a joint team of J-K Police, army and paramilitary forces cordoned off Pinglana village of Pulwama following inputs that two to three militants are present in the village.

As the joint team of forces was zeroing in on the target house, militants opened indiscriminate fire. In the initial exchange of fire, five army men were injured who were rushed to the army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar. Four of the soldiers including a Major, however, succumbed to injuries.

“There was firing only initial half an hour and then it stopped, ” said a police officer. “The searches in the area continue”, he added.
